Who sits where?
In singles, opponents sit across the board. In doubles, partners face each other.
Before the first board
Introduce partners, agree the rule source and identify who is keeping the score. If a turn is disputed, resolve it before another stroke.
A teamwork exercise
Discuss the layout after a practice board, when everyone can speak freely. Compare the available options and ask each person to explain their preferred line.
Keep formats distinct
Do not transfer a house convention into an organised match without checking its rules.
